Yes I have a URL shortener now

I finally got accepted by bit.ly to use their Pro version, which is invitation only.

What this means is I can have my own URL shortener so that instead of getting a link to this article which is

http://blog.randyphotography.com/2011/02/yes-i-a-url-shortener-now/ or having to use a service like google or bit.ly , I can setup my own domain name shortener.

I purchased rphoto.me which will be my URL shortener domain.

So now my links will be http://rphoto.me/(5digitnumber)

That way I can keep my shortener links my property which is important in the future…as shortener companies come and go. If they fold up shop that means any links that you used with that company stops working…that’s not good.

Now in facebook you will probably still see the normal link as FB often takes the shortener and removes it for the post (not all the time but most of the time). The best use of the shortener is on twitter, emails, and forums.

The good news is thought that no matter if the standard link or shorten link is used both are tracked by my server so I can see how many times a certain link is clicked.
